A two-objective optimization of ship itineraries for a cruise company

Abstract This paper deals with the problem of cruise itinerary planning which plays a central role in worldwide ship tourism. In particular, Day-by-day Cruise Itinerary Optimization (DCIO) is considered. Assuming that has been planned terms homeports and journey duration, DCIO consists determining daily schedule each so some Key Performance Indicators are optimized. The an itinerary, i.e. sequence visited ports, arrival departure time at port, greatly affect operative costs attractiveness. We propose Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation objective minimizing cost due to fuel port costs, while maximizing attractiveness index. latter strongly related ports as well overall itinerary. Therefore turns out be bi-objective optimization problem. provide its solution Pareto optimal points. Each single MILP arises solved by using exact algorithm, implemented commercial solver. consider day-by-day itineraries major luxury company many geographical areas all over world. Here we report, illustrative examples, results obtained on these real instances.
